Possibilities Journey, Inc. Our Reason For Being...
For many years now I have been moved in the direction of providing a new program for all spiritual and faith communities, dedicated to improved health, wellness and wholeness. In 2007, while enrolled in a Shalem Institute program for Spiritual Deepening, this call clarified into a call to possibilities – broadly encompassing health, wellness and wholeness for the mind, body and spirit. Health and wellness, for purposes of this initiative, is defined as God’s shalom – peace and wholeness of mind, body and spirit – not just the absence of an illness. This vision was further clarified through words by Daniel G. Blazer in a Christianity Today article in March 2009. In the introduction he wrote, "The church is God's hospital. It has always been full of people on the mend."
Churches (all faith communities) have always been and will always be places for the broken to congregate and hopefully be welcomed. Hope is found and nurtured in these sacred places. In fact, hope is created when a new imagining of possibilities for health and wellness is realized – and it occurs within a community of supporters and believers. Further, I believe that abundant life is created when connection, coherence, agency, blessing and hope are invited and nurtured. (From the book: “Leading Causes of Life”, Gunderson and Pray) This public charity initative is about nuturing abundant life through an ongoing relationship that empowers, enables, enhances and engages all persons.
Who am I? I’m a doctoral trained and licensed pharmacist with 20+ years of clinical experience. Most of my practice life has been spent caring for the sickest of persons in intensive care units (ICUs). Over the last several years I have been focusing more on end-of-life issues (a very common event in ICU life) and resultant spiritual issues. Since 1996, I have been a health care consultant to many different clients, but have focused on health improvements within the existing health care system. I have found our healthcare system to be broken beyond repair, and without the resources and insight to offer the type of programs that I am now being compelled to provide. It goes without saying, that no health care system can offer the wholistic care that can be offered through this type of non-profit approach – nor will the system ever truly (in my opinion) address issues of spirituality adequately.
Possibilities Journey (PJ) will exist to help ALL spiritual and faith communities understand their role in health care. Through a relationship with PJ focused on enabling, empowering, enhancing and engaging all persons in health, wellness and wholeness, spiritual and faith communities will recapture their historic role in providing needed caring and spiritual healing. Healing comes when compassionate space is created for others to name and share that which is in them causing suffering. PJ will be open to all persons without regard to race, creed, color, sex or any other limiting or discriminating factor.
Background data and forms can be found on this tab's sub-pages (e.g., Form 990's, IRS Determination letter). We hope you will find those documents helpful in explaining further what we're all about.
“ My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But, I believe that the desire to please You does in fact please You. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this, You will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore, I will trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.” (from: Thomas Merton, “Thoughts in Solitude”, Abbey of Gesthsemani)
We look forward to journeying with you.
